Pest control on patrol

I was reminded of the importance of the abc* rule again just the other day. I was minding the barbecue but I had my camera outside with me, getting a few shots in the flower beds with my telephoto lens. As luck would have it, the propane ran out about 1/2 way through. However, we learned the first rule of barbecuing many years ago - 'hst' (have second tank); we get a new full tank within days of one running out - avoids a great deal of disappointment.

I connected the full tank, and as I rounded the corner of the house to bring the empty tank to the front, I spied something slithering through the grass towards a stone border. In a flash, I put the tank down and ran to grab the camera. Now I trust you're not squeamish - after all, these are only photos ! (Oh yes, my understanding wife finished barbecuing).

*abc = always bring camera; you're not a photographer without one

(all shots made with a 70-200mm lens at f5.6, ISO200 and shutter speeds of 1/250, 1/100, and 1/80 sec)

she looked like she'd enjoyed a meal recently

Snakes do scare me! But somehow, you make pictures look beautiful. I would never have the guts to get close enough to photograph it though. I guess THAT makes a good photographer too.

At least you got some good pictures. Can't say that snakes are my favourite critters.

All creatures are beautiful and in the first picture you captured what this predator does best - SNEAKING ;-)

What a coincidence! You've got to check out my post tomorrow. :)

Great shots, Rick.

ABC...I'll have to remember that!

I've encountered five snakes already this spring. I much prefer seeing them in a photo than in my yard!!! Good job capturing it.

Love the photos!

Love the new header!

We got a gauge for our gas tank this year for just that reason. Now we will know when we are getting low.

Well I am afraid I would have been running very fast in the opposite direction .. not really a snake person!! The only way I would possibly get a photo of a snake slithering through my garden would be with a mega, mega telescopic lens (if there is such a thing)... Shiver!!

Oh my goodness, I'd be freaked right out and the only way I'd take a photo of any snake is with a super zoom lens! You have some fantastic shots here Rick but thank goodness I don't have to worry about snakes in my neck of the woods.

ABC all the way, sometimes I even have two cameras with me. Yup, I'm a true aspiring photographer. You're teaching me well Rick, you and Joseph will have me turned pro yet! lol Have a superb Saturday.

What gorgeous photo's!

I absolutely love snakes, so this wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest. I would have been right there next to you with my camera. (:

They are such marvellous creatures! Again, fantastic shots!

Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Yes, it's cliche, but snakes scare me. Love your abc rule too. I've recently started bringing my camera wherever I go.

snakes are pretty cool. not so much are the ones in australia where I recently visited. great photos :)

Thanks Julia - good thing this one didn't come closer - he might have got bbq'd ;-)

Thank you Laura - I had to learn 'ABC' the hard way :( Hope your weekend was great too !

Thanks Magda ! Actually these snakes are fairly harmless and they take care of us having too many mice or frogs. Have a wonderful week !

Thank you Hilda - I hope yours was also a good weekend !

Nothing to be afraid of, Elizabeth (although personally I'm not one to handle them). An occasion like this calls for a telephoto lens - don't think I'd stick a P&S in its face ;-)

Ha ha - thanks Ruth. In their own way they're quite charming though, don't you think ?

Thanks Joseph - I watched one in action last year sneaking up on a frog in our pond - simply amazing how stealthy they are (I wouldn't want to be an unwary frog !). Have a great week !

I guess great minds think alike Nancy ... ;-) You got a great capture ... or was that the snake who got one ? Thank you.

Rick said...

Thanks Michelle ! I've seen a few now too - this one was the first to hang around to get her photo taken ;-)

Oh I was, Fábio - I used the telephoto lens !

Ha ha, I can understand. Thanks, Soraia !

Thanks Tammy. We found having a 2nd tank solved our running-out-at-a-bad-time woes.

LOL Katherine - can't say I'd blame you - I've heard that there's some really BAD snakes down your way - I wouldn't stick around either and I'd certainly use a long lens (like I did here) to 'capture' them ! Have a great week.

It's the only way, Cloudia ! Aloha !

Ha ha Darlene - come to think of it, I don't recall seeing snakes in Alberta either, but they must have some. And yep, I used the zoom lens (with 2x extender) although I was probably only 4' from it. Hey - you are really becoming a pro judging by your recent shots - very nice ! Have a super week.

LOL - bedankt Riet - 'abc' maakt het makkelijk (vergeet ik nooit). Ook een fijne week !

Thank you Rick, coming from a pro like you this is a very high compliment. :-)

LOL Marty - I think she was speaking in 'tongues' ;-) Thank you for your lovely comments and bisous - I always appreciate both ! And I send you warm bisous, without a forked tongue ;-)

Thank you Saz ! Do you have snakes in your area ?

Ha ha - thank you Betty (but I did use a long lens ;-)

Nothing to fear Sharon - just keep a healthy distance ;-) And yes, ABC avoids those disappointing "if only I'd brought my camera" moments !

Thank you Andrew - and from what I've read about snakes down under, I'd certainly agree !

To everyone I haven't visited yet - I'm working to catch up on comments and visits - I'll be there. soon. promise

You're welcome, Darlene !

We get adders in wooded areas, but there's none near me unfortunately. I'd love to be able to photograph them though! Such beautiful animals.

Rick said...

Oh oh - aren't adders venomous ? I`d be using a long lens to capture those, Saz !

Y I K E S ! ! ! I'd have peed my pants right then & there! heheheee

The last steam train stopped here in Poplar Bluff the other day & guess what? I DIDN'T BRING MY CAMERA that day! *GASP* How could I have left it at home? Oh, well, I live pretty close to work, so when my daughter called & said they were there checking it out, I sped home, CRAZILY, & grabbed my camera & was there in a flash, surprisingly w/ no speeding tickets! I was in such a hurry because it was 100 degrees out there & my daughter & her boyfriend were waiting on me... standing outside... in the heat... she text me & said, "IT'S HOT OUT HERE WOMAN!" LoL!

Moral of this story... ABC... ALWAYS BRING CAMERA... it pays, so that your kid doesn't have to stand outside in the heat waiting for you because "You forgot your camera"!!!
ROFLMBO!!! =)
