(Day 281 ) One-at-a-time bridge

On my travels around the countryside over the past week or so I criss-crossed the Rideau River a few times and I visited some out of the way places. Some of the roads didn't look like they had changed much from the pioneer days. Today I went back to a place that once was a thriving community built around a mill on the river, as so many communities were - Andrewsville, self-named by the Andrews brothers in the 19th century.

When the canal was pushed through in 1832, the road and bridge needed to accommodate only horse and wagon. I'm sure if the community had continued to grow, both the road and bridge would have been widened to handle more and larger traffic. When the railway bypassed Andrewsville, sealing its fate, the narrow road and single lane bridge continued to handle the traffic, which to this day remains light.

A great mean to measure time and life. Great picture indeed, as it can be said for the site as a whole as well.

Please have a good weekend.

Rick, how many languages do you speak?

I love this photo, the bridge is so old fashioned. I can't even imagine anyone trying to get me to cross that bridge in my car, I'd be freaked right out knowing how old it is, I'd think that it'd be about to collapse at any given time. You're a brave man Rick, a very brave man!

I can tell you're having a wonderful time traveling around capturing all these fantastic photos. As I've mentioned before I love things of old, there is so much history having crossed that bridge... takes the mind on a journey into the past. Love the angle that the photo is taken at...despite it's age it still looks a strong bridge. Hope your having a stella weekend.

I wouldn't be able to resist a photo or two here either. I like how you stepped to the side of the bridge. Great perspective. The fall colors and the rusty iron create a beautiful photo.

@darlin - I speak 2 languages well - Dutch & English, and can get by - after a few beers - in German; I can read French at a fairly simple level but don't speak it well. And I've learned a few words of Spanish and Portuguese - mainly through blogs. (I confess that there are times that I use an online translator when I get a comment that I can't quite comprehend).

I was trying to find out how old this bridge is but couldn't. It looks like the wood decking was replaced within the last 10 years but the steel appears to be quite old (but not 1832 !) It didn't look like it was in danger of imminent collapse though ;-)

@Katherine - I sure am (I always take a watch otherwise I`d always be home late !). I had driven over this bridge a few times before but made a point of visiting it for this day`s post - I think it`s quite solid. And the history here (although pretty short by European standards) is fascinating.

My weekend is superb and I hope yours is too !

@Carolyn Ford - thank you Carolyn; I made a few photos here from a few different perspectives - including lying right down between the 2 raised areas, but I liked this one best. Have a great weekend !

@Scott - I enjoy shots with a wide angle lens - sometimes provides a whole new perspective (although weird distortions can occur too). I noticed you also enjoyed a gorgeous day ! Thanks for stopping by Scott.
