(Day 178) A rose by any other name

As we're wont to do, we went for a stroll this afternoon through the woods to the back forty. Since the pathway was rather wet from yesterday's downpour, I went back to the house to exchange sandals for my rubber duck boots. The rest of the group went ahead. As I returned to meet up with them, a strange looking bud/bloom/flower caught my eye and I knew I would have to come back to get a shot or three (we have a tacit agreement that I don't bring the camera on strolls like this since it detracts from social interaction).

I went back to the spot after our 'social' walk and made the shots below. Now, looking at the plant's stem and leaves I could have sworn it was a rose - look for yourself. But I've never seen a 'bloom' such as this - certainly not a rose. I haven't googled it yet - perhaps one of our botanist cybersleuths will know.

I have absolutely no idea what kind of flower this is but you have captured it beautifully. I am the same when out in nature... always seeing things through the eye of my camera...thinking this would make a good photo. It helps me really take a good look at the world.
Rick I love your sunset shot, it's so beautiful!

@Katherine - welcome back; hope things are back to 'normal' for you. Thanks for your comments. This 365 project has helped me do that too - I think I'm seeing the world a little better, and differently, now.

Have a great week!

@Ruth's Photo Blog - thank you Ruth. I was awestruck as the sun went down by that beach - I'm set for Sunset Sundays for a few months now!

@Julia - thanks Julia. You can come over and feel the thorns for yourself ;-)

I can't tell you anything about the flower but I can tell you - like I needed to - the Sunset is BEEUUUUTIFULLL! Thanks for sharing it and playing along with Sunset Sunday.

@Scott - thank you. I felt like I had died and gone to heaven while capturing that sunset. So many variations as the cloud formations changed and the fading sunlight cast all sorts of patterns on the clouds.

Hi rick the flower is weird but the sunset is amazing and taking my breath away.
I've missed you and will try to be back on track again.
Hugs Dag.

I'd like to call it a "bird nest rose" ;).

It has all the elements of a rose except the main element, the flower petals.

Awesome shot and something really unique. Who know you might have just found a new breed of flower not yet know to mankind.

@Barefoot from Heaven - thanks Dag! Glad to see you back and hope all is well with you and your mil. (ps - I'm also running behind on visiting).

Have a great week!

@M. Hassan - LOL - I like that name M! I've been searching the internet for something similar but no luck yet - maybe it's a mutant - it's about 400m from the house so it's not something in our water ;-)

I'm still searching but can't find anything yet.

Rick that flower has me baffled, I've googled and checked a few different gardening sites and I'm with M. on this one, lets just call it a Birds Nest Rose! :-)

Extremely wonderful shots of the flowers and the sunset!

Also it is extremely considerate to break the ABC rule and enjoy some quality family time. I also get extremely distracted when I have my camera with me (all the time now) and if for some odd reason I don't have a camera in my hand, I still take photos in my mind! P365 is one of the most amazing eye openers for me; to see, to feel, to share, and to love all that we are blessed with. I now believe 100% that it's not a situation or circumstance which causes anything in life, it's how we view the event. The quote "I'd rather be serene than be right" comes to mind! :-)

Have a wonderful day!

ImPOSTER!!! Imposter alert! Imposter alert! ;o)

Whatever it is... lovely photographs as always.

I have to remember not to bring my camera along on social walks. I always wind up frustrated that people are trying to talk to me while I'm trying to work! LOL!

The photo of the sky probably proves the existence of a superior power above humans!

@chasity - thank you Chas. The sunset lasted quite awhile and kept transforming into all sorts of shapes and colours - just fantastic - and I kept shooting.

As for the plant, I'm baffled too - been checking w/o luck so far.

Have a great week!

Rick said...

@darlin - Bird's Nest Rose it is (someone will have to give it a Latin name).

Yes, P365 has also been a real 'eye-opener' for me. My wife calls it an obsession - personally I prefer the word passion. I'm seeing the world through my camera too - whether I have it with me or not. I think if we look closely, we can see the hand of God in everything.

Rick said...

@imac - thanks mac! Funny thing was that when I rejoined the group they ALL had expected me to bring the camera - I told them I just wanted to be unpredictable ;-) but next time I will.

Rick said...

@Krista - hey, do you have these plants in the Yukon ? If not, maybe I can send you a cutting ;-)

Yep, I prefer to be the happy wanderer when I've got the camera with me - eliminates those 'testy' moments :-)

Rick said...

@CarreraCaballo - you're preaching to the choir, Joseph!

What Karen Sees said...

I agree with all the above. Your sunset shot is spectacular. There is nothing like the 'natural high' of being at the right place, at the right time, and with a camera ready to capture the moment!!!

The colors are wonderful, and I love the sunset photo.

Rick said...

@Karen - thanks Karen. I agree (see Ansel Adams quote in my profile).

Rick said...

@Sharon M - thanks Sharon; I have a few more from that evening that I'll share on Sunset Sundays.
