(Day 117) A nasty surprise!

I was awakened this morning by a phone call from one of my daughters to tell me that the town nearest to us was in the news. Now this is unusual because nothing much of any importance ever happens here. Well, the news was that we were experiencing a significant snowstorm! Of course I didn't believe her and immediately went to look out the window - yep, we had a January blizzard going on!

We lived in Calgary for many years and this would hardly be newsworthy, unless there was 60cm (2') of snow, because April and May can be very snowy there. But this is almost unheard of in these parts at this time of year. So yes, these are not pictures from my archives in January (see the leaves and flowers) and it's still snowing as I post this. I'm not sure I believe the weather forecast which promises 21C (70F) by Friday.

Snow?! I didn't remember you were from Canada, I have read again about you ;).
By the way, yes, the dog in my blog is mine. Actually her name is Cata, it's a good dog.

@cata - yes, snow! It was 30C here just a few weeks ago and now this :( Should be gone in a few days (I hope). Your dog is very beautiful - is it a Burmese mountain dog ?

Great shots Rick!

Wow, beautiful photos even in the end of April! It's raining here again and that is rare for us this time of year. (California)

That is too funny Rick - I live in the piedmont of North Carolina, but was in the mountains today, and it snowed on me too! It started as rain, then rain/snow, then to all snow. It came down quite hard for about 10 minutes, then the sun peeked through a bit. My photos will be up soon.

I absolutely LOVE the first shot by the way!

Wow, this is totally Alberta weather... hate to say this Rick but I'm glad that you took one for the team! ;-) It was overcast and rainy today but I'll take that over the snow any day of the week. Last year I couldn't even plant my garden on the May long weekend, it snowed!

Awesome photos as usual though!

@POD - thank you. I'll bet it isn't 32F there either! Want to trade weather ? :)

@Photog Ave - thank you Avery. That's mountain weather for you - 4 seasons in 1 day! It snowed all day here - ended up with 3-4". (btw - that's a bridge I built over our upper pond). I'll look for your photos.

@darlin - you're welcome. :) We were in Calgary 7 years ago and on April 26 we got 60cm! Drove through it to get to a wedding in Canmore - I love a good blizzard. in January! I know about planting in Alberta - 1st week of June was usually ok.

Thanks for dropping by and always appreciate your comments.

Wow! The first shot is amazing, but I'm happy I don't live where you live right now. I can't believe its getting warmer here even though the weekend would be rainy and a bit cold, but I prefer that over snow.

Hope you get some warm weather soon.

Oh My Goodness Rick...from sunshine one day to snowflakes the next...how very strange! They're fantastic pictures though...but oh no those poor little frostbitten flowers!! I hope the warmer weather returns soon Rick. This is unbelievable!

@M - thank you - even though it was snowing, windy and cold it was also a photo op. btw - the weatherman is calling for 22C on Saturday :)

hi, can you re-follow me, don't know how it happened, but I lost all my followers this morning. Something went wrong with my blog.

@Katherine - that's a Canadian spring - totally unpredictable! We'll see if we get to 22C on the weekend - bye bye snow - till Dec. I hope :) Thanks for dropping by.

Hmmm ... we have had April blizzards here before ... think I prefer your photos

Rick said...

@joey - thank you. You wouldn't believe the difference today! 55F (13C) and all the snow is gone! :)

Rick said...

@S. Etole - ha ha - yes; I would have preferred seeing it in others' photos too :) We're back to spring today - only reminders are my photos.

Hey the animal in your snow photo is almost as cute as the one in mine. LOL. Great shots and story. The Snow is definitely hitting the west right now. Since you are almost due North of us, we all get it pretty much together.

@Scott - thank you. Saw your YS shots - great! 'Wonderful' weather - hope we don't see that again till Dec. :)

That's crazy! It was 82 degrees here today.

Rick said...

@Kyria - you're right. It was 86 here on April 3! Supposed to be up to 71 here on Sat.

Beautiful snowy pics, Rick. Yes, I think mother nature makes up her own rules in terms of weather. Look at those poor frozen tulips!

Rick said...

Thanks Becky - they would have looked much better in Jan/Feb (but hey, that was a year ago ;-) Fortunately the tulips didn't get harmed.
