I decided earlier today that I wanted to do some night shots, since it had been a while. I liberally covered myself in mosquito repellent (I'm not sure what my blood type is but it's grade A as far as mosquitoes are concerned) and took the tripod and remote shutter release out with me. The moon was not quite full but it cast a nice light on the clouds.
You can see the effect of a small aperture on the moon in the first shot. And no, the second shot is not of the northern lights - that's the effect of a long shutter speed on moving clouds.

Good for you! You are inspiring me.
@joey - glad I was of help joey ;-)
Sometimes it's fun to get out and shoot at night. Interesting how even just 20 seconds makes the earths movement visible in the stars. Fun shots. Thanks.
@Scott - unfortunately my camera (Canon Rebel XS) doesn't have an easy way to get really long exposures - I have to keep the remote shutter release button pressed down in 'bulb' mode - makes the thumb pretty sore after a few minutes; I'd like to try a 30-minute exposure to really see the effects on the stars. Thanks for your comments Scott.
I love that star effect.
Fijne vakantie gehad?
Schitterende foto's Rick, van wat er in de nacht te zien is.
Leuk dat je mijn blog ook weer bezocht hebt,en bedankt voor je vriendelijke reactie.
Lieve groetjes,

The second picture is moving indeed :-)

i finally had to spray our bushes with cutter because we couldn't go out without being swarmed. it was miserable.
you are very dedicated....and it shows.
your photos really paid off.
You present night in a welcoming way ... we could do without the mosquitoes here, too.
Leuk dat je m'n blog hebt gevonden! Hoop dat je er wat van herkent! Leuke blog! x
I like the first shot a lot. Nice tones. I like the underexposure at the bottom of the photo which gives a beautiful contour.
btw ik volg je terug!
These are beautiful Rick, and it certainly looks like the N.Lights without colour, this shot is soooo good.
You would make a great contender for the Header Challenge lol.

@CarreraCaballo - LOL, nice choice of words Joseph ;-) Thank you.
@chasity - the skitters are competing for the 'provincial bird' title! And with the rain lately, things will only get worse.
Thanks for your comments Chas!
@S. Etole - thank you Susan; it can be a wonderful time for photos (minus the mosquitoes of course!)
