(Day 222) Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Tuesday Aug. 10, 2010

Yesterday was a travel day so I thought I'd better make a few photos prior to our flights, just in case ... I had already picked one out to post. When we fly I'm usually the one in the window seat - I like to look out at the scenery and I always have my camera handy. We had some turbulence on the first segment and I could soon see why - we were passing close to some thunderstorms, which usually means interesting cloud formations (and you know I like those), and sometimes a rainbow.

Well, I saw my first rainbow from 35,000 feet, and I managed to get a few shots before it disappeared. Oh, and since I was shooting some cloud formations, I figured I'd post one of those too.

Both photos were made with a 60mm lens, aperture f8, ISO200; shutter speed 1/800 sec and 1/400 sec)

Wow... I'm sure not many have captured a rainbow at 35,000 ft! Very intriguing shot(s), especially the top one. Do you ever enter any of your photos in contests/shows? I also like your title... it seems strangely familiar to me!
:)

@becky - I'm sure glad I wasn't snoozing when this came by (I did manage about 20 minutes somewhere along the way) because it lasted less than a minute.

Oh, hope you don't mind me plagiarizing a bit on the title - it just seemed so appropriate ;-) btw - glad you liked the song; Eva is a favourite.

@Katherine - thanks Katherine; I like making photos of them from a plane - there's usually so much variety.

@becky - (forgot to answer your question) - no, haven't entered any contests/shows; you've got great photos on your site - do you enter any ?

Wow, I don't think I have ever seen a rainbow from 35,000 ft. Clouds, yes...but not a rainbow. This is so beautiful! Don't ever give up the window seat!

WOW! Love the over the rainbow shot, it's magnificent and such vivid colors... awesome capture Rick! I also like the crisp colors in the second photo but that first one has touched my heart and soul!

Congrats!! That would be quite awesome to see a rainbow from a plane.

But--That is tooooo funny that you saw one on Tuesday-while you were traveling=I saw one on Tuesday as well-and I was traveling!!!
Do you have any idea where you were when you saw it-or maybe the time (you could look to see when the pic was taken)?

Rick,
I did get an "honorable mention" for a photo contest for "Weatherwise Magazine" 2009... I don't know how to put a link in the comments section- but you can google it (I'm In 2009- Rebecca). It wasn't one of my best photos, but it is fun to see something you've done published. You may be interested in doing it next year, as you've got some great weather shots!! Other than that, I've sold some cards here & there... would like to do something more with it, but not quite sure how to go about it yet. There are soo many wonderful photographers out there!

Real nice sky and cloud formation shots Rick.

@Carolyn Ford - thank you Carolyn - first time I saw one from a plane too; yep - the window seat stays mine ;-)

@darlin - thank you; I was really surprised to see it, although I'd been watching the clouds for a while. I noticed the thunderstorm, then the rainbow appeared.

Have a great Friday.

@Photog Ave - I took it at 7:47 pm; we took off from Ft. Myers at 7:00 pm so this might have been in northern Florida, maybe Jacksonville (?) Would be too funny if you were in the area then.

Thanks Avery.

@CarreraCaballo - thank you Joseph - my first airborne rainbow also :)

@becky - hey, congrats - I found your photo on their website - cool cloud formation! I'll take a look at entering their next contest.

I haven't done anything yet commercially with my photography, although I'm being asked to do some interior shots (kitchens) for a design company - no weather shots there ;-)

And you're right - there are lots of great photographers out there !
