A marigold by any other name ...

Over the past number of years our lower pond has been gradually transformed into a partial marsh. It now contains some bulrushes (cattails), arrowheads, pickerel weed, wild irises, marsh grasses, and water lilies. But the star of the marsh, especially at this time of year, is the marsh marigold - the only name I've ever known this plant by. I liberated a few plants from the wild several years ago and they're thriving and helping the transformation.

I did a little research and was surprised by 2 things: 1) all parts of the plant and flower are poisonous, and 2) it has many names, likely due to its wide distribution around the world. Here are a few: Kings Cups, Water Blobs, May Blobs, Mollyblobs, Horseblobs, Bull’s Eyes, Leopard’s Foot, Marybuds, Water Dragon, Cow Lily, Soldier Buttons, Water Goggles, Gools, Drunkards, Mayflower, Pollyblobs, Water Bubbles, Gollins, Water Crowfoot, and the Publican. And there are likely more, but you get the idea.

I'm sure you're all aware of Blogger issues over the past day or so. I understand comments will be restored. I visited a number of your blogs but was unable to leave any comments - I will try again.Thank you for your comments - I was able to view them before they disappeared.

I didn't know they were poisonous. They are so pretty.
The Blogger issues were so bothersome. I write in the mornings and, like the rest of us, couldn't get it done.
Oh well not such a big thing compared to so many things.

Rick, that's it... I'm coming down there for a month to learn how to take photos from you. You do the most amazing work and the scenery you are blessed with is stunning. Needless to say I love these shots, the flowers are so pretty in this natural environment.

Whew, and here I was about to start repeating myself to others comments on my blog ... I'm sure glad I didn't as I was sure I responded to a few of them. Have a fantastic weekend!

Happy Spring Rick and it looks like you have had lots of spring color already going thru some of your resent blogs. I wish we had all those plants growing in our marshes and ponds. I have tried many times to tranplant or seed just cattails. We do have a great variety of animals that make use of the water ways at least. Beautiful photos Take Care Carrie

Beautiful shots, Rick :-)

About the poison, the more colorful the poisonous I have once learned as a rule of thumb many moon years ago. I was a scout . . . Hehehe . . .

I encountered the same Blogger issues the past few days, I hope that they will fix them ASAP!

Joseph

Hi there Rick, how's life out there. Finally flowers starting to pop up. I'm gladd to be back in blogland and see around to check out what I've been missing for the last couple of weeks. Gosh I was away from blogging a long long time. Try to catch up though, but give me time.

Oh and yea that blog issue...grrrr.
Well we made it back into it right?
Hope things are okay with you and your loved ones.
Sending big hugs from this part of the world (again).

Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments. Blogger hasn't been very friendly these past few days (neither has my internet connection) but things seem to be getting better.

I really appreciate hearing from you all and am working 'overtime' to catch up with ya !
