(Day 289) Fall extravaganza

Sat. Oct. 16, 2010

I was on a high today, well, at least all afternoon and I'm still coming down. Ok, don't worry - it was a legal high and it didn't involve drugs of any sort. I had the afternoon all to myself and decided to revisit a place where we got rained out earlier this year - Jones Falls on the Rideau Waterway.

Now I thought that the fall colours were coming to an end because the trees around here have been shedding their leaves and are almost barren. However, I was in for a wonderful surprise. You might see some sunbeams in a few photos - they were beaming down on me all afternoon. As I meandered through the woods and along the locks and little lakes, I said a little thank you to the Creator for putting on such a show for us. Perhaps if more people could/would take the time to get out and enjoy what's been made especially for us, we'd have less time and inclination to go fight each other.

I won't tell you how many photos I made but it's the reason I'm late posting tonight - I've been going through them and having to make choices. I whittled and whittled some more and I narrowed it down to the ones I posted below. In the interest of time I'm not going to post my camera settings for each photo - I used 3 lenses: 10-22mm, 18-55mm and 70-200mm and used a fairly small aperture for a larger depth of field in most cases, and I stuck to my usual ISO200.

Okay Rick, I'm totally wowed now! These are by far the most magnificent autumn photos I've seen yet! You are totally blessed to have the scenery to shoot. Am I jealous? hmmm nope, not really...I have Alberta to shoot! I just have to make the time now to get out there and take the photos. It's tough being a full time student but somehow I'm going to do it, you've totally inspired me. Oh, it must be bed time, Abbie's snoring now, too funny... 'nite Rick and awesome, totally awesome photos!

Gorgeous, Gorgeous & more Gorgeous!!!
Rick, I love your observation if that more people got out to experience such beauty, there would be "less time & inclination to go fight each other." I think there is some truth to that! When I'm out walking in nature & experiencing such beauty, i just feel better... more peaceful. And when I get too busy & haven't been out... I feel less centered.
Perhaps you are on to something here!
Beautiful photos & glad you had such a wonderful day!
:)

@jasmin - we've been blessed with a beautiful fall, full of colour; I think the fact that the weather has stayed cool really helped.

Danke jasmin und viele Grüße !!

@darlin - wow, you must really be burning that post-midnight oil !

Thank you for your kind words. I recall beautiful scenes too in Alberta in the fall, especially the larches in Larch Valley, near Moraine Lake ! Carpe diem, or you'll be shooting winter photos !

Wow, such beautiful colors. Alabama has seen so little rain in the last couple of months that the trees are just drying up without much color to show. I've enjoyed looking at yours. Thanks for sharing.

Rick said...

@Katherine - thank you Katherine ! I have a feeling that yesterday was the last gasp for the colours of autumn. We now await the cold with bated breath.

Have a great week !

Rick said...

@Ruth's Photo Blog - Ruth, thank you for taking the time to stop by and leave an encouraging comment. I'm glad that this reflection of his creation brought you joy this morning. I pray that you and Jake will have a good and peaceful week.

@Cat/The Whimsical Gardener - thank you Cat; sometimes the cooler climate delivers colourful blessings such as these - early to mid-October is just the right time to visit !

Rick said...

@becky - thank you Becky ! That's the feeling I get - and I think thousands of people should get that opportunity. Can you image how inner city gang kids would feel if they could truly experience that !

Rick said...

@imac - thank you mac; perhaps I'll have to pull some out and post during the winter - just as a reminder of how lovely it can be.

Rick said...

@teca - LOL ! Thank you teca - so much beauty it had to be shared !

Aqueça abraços e beijos !

Rick said...

@Dawn - thank you ! I had a hard time just picking these - there were so many opportunities there for great photos. I felt like I had died and gone to photographer's heaven ! ;-)

Rick said...

@CarreraCaballo - LOL Joseph ! Thank you. Did you try turning any upside down ?

Rick said...

@darlin - LOL !! Mike is my son - he designs kitchens, bathrooms and other areas as his profession. You got an unintended sneak preview of his renovations - I was working on a draft web site for him but it wasn't ready for prime time. Soon.

Oh, by the way, he's happily married and has a son - sorry :(

darlin said...

I wouldn't have known this unless I asked! LOL He does some amazing work, you must be one proud papa! I don't know why I went to see your post through your main page and found that site, but I did and I'm glad I did. Now if I ever build my dream home I know who I want to do the kitchen, and the living room, and the bathroom, and the bedrooms, and the family room... lol

Rick said...

@marty - merci beaucoup encore marty ! So much beauty around us - a blessing to be able to do it. You see more of Canada, I see more of France (and Belgium !) - it's a great exchange.

Ok - je t'envoie plein de bisous aussi; see - copy & paste ;-)

And have a wonderful week !

Rick said...

@S. Etole - it truly does ! Once can only imagine what heaven will look like !

Rick said...

@Julia - thank you for visiting and commenting Julia !

Rick said...

@Lisa - thanks for dropping by and your kind words, Lisa.

Rick said...

@Chad - thank you; I did eventually have to 'tear' myself away, although I did stop a few more times on the way home - got my sunset photo for Sunset Sunday that way.

Welcome back.

Rick said...

@darlin - yep, he`s come a long way - started off working in the shop building those dream kitchens, but he`s always been a creative sort and got tired of doing the same old. Got an opportunity to start designing about 18 months ago and has designed over $1M worth of kitchens, bathrooms, etc so far this year.

I`m starting to do some photography of his work - we`ll see where it goes.

darlin said...

Wow, I can see the talent! That's awesome to have this skill, and with his skill of designing and your skill of shooting the photos I can see nothing but positive come out of this!

Rick said...

@darlin - I`ll let you know how it goes - thanks for the encouragement !

joey said...

Autumn stunning, Rick ... love the reflections.

@joey - thank you joey; awesome time of year, isn't it !
